Reusability

Definition

Reusing building blocks and solutions means that public administration bodies first and foremost look for available existing solutions and if these are positively assessed, they are reused. This presupposes that public bodies adopt a policy of openness to documentation, sharing solutions, concepts, frameworks, specifications, tools and interoperability constituents through sectoral or horizontal interoperability lists. The reusability of ICT solutions (e.g. software components, application programming interfaces, standards), information and data helps promote interoperability by extending the lifecycle of a solution, prolonging and extending its use. In addition, reuse contributes to cost and time savings. These existing standards and specifications can and should be used more widely and beyond the sector for which they were originally developed.
